TOPPENISH, Wash. - Yakama Nation Legends Casino is celebrating its 15th Anniversary distributing more than $700K to local groups.
As part of the Yakama Cares program, the casino will give out $777,371 in grant money to 167 recipients at the annual event on Wednesday.
The casino annually distributes the grants through its Charitable Contribution fund to create a positive impact in the community.
The committee, made up of five community members and Yakama Nation Legends Casino employees, received over 700 applications to evaluate this year.
Committee members say they usually base which applications to select based on youth/educational need, medical benefit to the community or assistance to senior citizens.
The 163 organizations receiving a distribution this year are located throughout the Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin, and include a K-12 library in Bickleton, direct assistance for disasters through the Red Cross, and science lab models and materials in Wapato. Most of the grants range from $1,000 to $5000.
Non-profit groups this year will receive a total of $366,075. The casino will give an additional $411,296 to the Yakima Sheriff's Office, Toppenish Fire, Toppenish Police and Fire District 5.
The Yakima Sheriff's Office will receive $230,000 to add in-car visual and audio systems to 25 vehicles.
