WEST RICHLAND, Wash- A specialty automaker with connections around the globe is bringing their business to the Tri-Cities.
Back in 2007, Jerod Shelby's Ultimate Aero broke the world record for fastest production car going 257mph on a stretch of road near Paterson. Tuesday's groundbreaking for the new SSC North America building was another important milestone for Shelby's company, along with the rest of the city of West Richland.
"SSC America, but it'll always be affectionately known as Shelby Super Cars for me," said West Richland Mayor Donna Noski.
Jerod Shelby had offers from around the world to build his headquarters, but he is sticking with his hometown.
"For us it was a no brainer to go with West Richland. They really embraced us and offered a lot of incentives to keep us here locally," he said.
The West Richland Chamber of Commerce is glad to get Shelby to sign up with their group.
"This has the potential to transform how people view not only West Richland but the entire Tri-Cities," said Troy Berglund from Benton REA.
"I think he (Shelby) really wants all the other local businesses to grow from his plant too," said May Hays of the Chamber of Commerce.
The new building would include a visitor center and museum that would be open to the public. Shelby thinks this might bring in tourists to the area who could come and enjoy the local winery scene and maybe spend even more money in our area.
