KENNEWICK, Wash. - With the 4th of July coming up, experts say there are many precautions you can take to keep your pets from getting scared.
Loud noises, like fireworks, can be startling, so employees at Petsmart recommend something like a "Thunder Jacket," which swaddles your cat or dog to calm their nerves.
You can also try calming collars or diffusers, which release anti-stress animal pheromones, or feed them natural supplements that ease anxiety.
"When pets hear thunder, lighting, or even fireworks," said Patrick McKennan, the store manager at the Kennewick Petsmart, "what ends up happening, is they get a little anxious and afraid. And they don't know what that loud bang was, so it really does stress them out."
But noise may not be your only concern.
You may want to consider pet sunscreen, chapstick or a life jacket if your dog is on the water.
There's also special wax you can put on their paws to keep them from burning when they walk on hot surfaces.
