BENTON-FRANKLIN COUNTIES, Wash. - The Traffic Safety Task Force for Benton and Franklin counties released the results of this year's Summer Kick-off DUI Enforcement campaign.
The report shows from June 21st through July 7th, police contacted 407 drivers and arrested 46 impaired drivers. Of the 100 traffic citations issued by officers for various traffic
violations, 39 were for speeding, 6 for cell phone use, and 10 for
Officers made 38 arrests for other crimes including
5 felony warrants, 12 misdemeanor warrants, 9 misdemeanor crimes, and
12 driving while license suspended or revoked.
Last year at this time, there were 349 drivers contacted and 74 drivers arrested for impaired driving. Of the 141 traffic citations issued, 48 were for speeding.
Police say summer is a particularly dangerous time on our roadways. There were 4 traffic deaths in Benton and Franklin Counties during the summer of 2012. The 2013 summer traffic fatality numbers are not yet available.
Police say the extra patrols are part of "Target Zero" Washington's Strategic Highway Safety Plan to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero by the year 2030.
