KENNEWICK, Wash. - Operation Dry Water is underway. The nationwide campaign is meant to enforce drinking and boating laws this weekend.
Franklin County, Walla Walla County, Kittitas County, Yakima County and Benton County marine deputies will be out in force.
"Fourth of July's coming up. This is the beginning of the boating season and we want to let people know that we're going to be out. We're going to be enforcing the laws. We want to educate people. Education is so much better than enforcement if people will mind what they're taught," said Sgt. Bob Brockman of the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
Just like a DUI, the legal limit is .08 for BUI's.
According to the State Parks Boating Program, boating under the influence is to blame for 30% of all boating fatalities in Washington. Including five of the eight so far this year.
A BUI will land you in jail and cost you $500.
