NBCRightNow.com - Washington State troopers say the accident along Highway 395 happened when a nearby brush fire caused smoke to cover the roadway, slowing down traffic. During the haze, several vehicles collided causing a pickup truck to roll onto the right shoulder.
Medstar airlifted the driver of the pickup truck to Kadlec Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Troopers say the driver was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown into the back seat.
There was another collision shortly after this one. Troopers say that collision only resulted in minor injuries.

At least one semi-truck and three vehicles appear to be involved in the crash.
Right now the southbound lanes of 395 are closed at milepost 35, 12 miles north of Pasco near Eltopia. The Department of Transportation says northbound traffic is also backed up for about 2 miles.
A Medstar helicopter is transporting at least one person to the hospital.
Fire crews are also on scene fighting a small brush fire next to the highway.
