RICHLAND, Wash. - Thursday's date of 3-14 holds a special significance for math lovers.
Hundreds of math and science enthusiasts gathered at WSU Tri-Cities to celebrate Pi Day, and no, we're not talking about the dessert.
Pi is equal to about 3.14. To make it even sweeter, Thursday is also Albert Einstein's birthday. The Math, Engineering and Science Achievement Program organized competitions and workshops to get about 200 middle school students excited about numbers.
"Make it exciting, make it relevant so that students are not just sitting in a classroom, doing equations but at the same time they're actually learning something. You know all the activities we have are hands on, so they're involved, they're engaged, they're doing something," said MESA Director Neiri Carrasco.
After the work was done, they celebrated with pizza pie for lunch, and a pie eating contest.
