KENNEWICK, Wash., -- Kennewick General Hospital's Foundation and Diabetes Education Department has opened registration for a summer day camp for fifty children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
In its second year, Camp KGH is scheduled for July 9th to the 11th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to children ages 7 to 14 who have been diagnosed with the disease.
The goal of Camp KGH is to teach participants about their diagnoses and provide them tools for managing it in a way that doesn't limit their day-to-day life. Important features of the event include relationship building with peers in similar situations as well as close interaction with mentors and volunteers who can relate to their experiences and offer advice.
The camp will be held at the Southridge Sports Complex in the mornings; camp participants will be transported to Tri-Cities Court Club for additional activities.
Camp KGH started in August of 2012 and had 24 children participate.
The event's positive outcomes for the participants moved HAPO Community Credit Union to pledge $30,000 to KGH Foundation to expand the camp in 2013.
