KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Kennewick Irrigation District is one step closer to completing a three-year project to line earthen canals and conserve water.
On Thursday the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's awarded KID a $1.5M grant to go toward the $6.9M project. The money came from the Bureau's Water Smart Water and Energy Efficiency Grant Program.
KID is in the process of lining 14.6 miles of their earthen canal to improve efficieny and safety. They also expect to save water from seepage reduction. A portion of that water will remain instream to support additional fishery habitat in the Yakima River Basin, with remaining water savings used to shore up supplies during periods of shortage.
KID says the awarded grant is a major breakthrough for their modernization and water conservation efforts.
