KENNEWICK, Wash. - They are at school early every morning with their bright colored vests and flags, keeping their friends and classmates safe while crossing the street.
And Tuesday, about 500 5th-grade crossing guards from Kennewick schools got their reward with an annual picnic in Columbia Park.
There was a barbeque and all kinds of law enforcement vehicles for the kids to check out. A Medstar helicopter even landed on the grass.
"After putting in a lot of hard work they actually get a party and the benefits of what happens when you do hard work and they get to see the responsibility they have of keeping kids safe all year," said Lincoln Elementary teacher, Michele Earley.
Kennewick police say they have put on the picnic for around 30 years.
