NEAR CLE ELUM, Wash. - Dozens of families have resorted to evacuation centers as the Taylor Ridge Fire continued to burn Thursday. While it may not be the first thing on their minds, those affected by a wildfire should contact their insurers as soon as possible to start the claims process. Many policies include coverage for emergency shelter or fees associated with boarding pets.
Fire victims should also keep a log of all conversations involving the claim: who you spoke with, what was said and when you talked.
"You need to keep track of everyone and everything that you're doing," said American Family Insurance Agent Brett Turner. "The receipts that you've acquired, because if you lose it, it's going to make the claim process go longer before you can get reimbursed your money."
If the home is accessible, agents advise you to take photos or video of the damage. A home inventory is also helpful. Try to put together a list of what was in the home, especially all the valuable.
