KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Kennewick police say the most frequent crimes on a daily basis are burglaries and car prowls.
Sgt. Mike Genack says it's likely more than ninety percent of local break-ins result from people not locking their cars or homes when they leave them. Open windows are also a common invite for criminals.
Sgt. Genack warns people not to assume their property is safe and to always lock it up.
"People that commit these crimes are looking for the easy target. If they're doing car prowls or walking down the street and looking in windows and they see that you're leaving item of value in the car because they're visible and the car's unlocked, I mean, you might as well put a sign up that says steal me," says Genack.
Sgt. Genack urges people to call police if someone unfamiliar is roaming in your neighborhood and says that's often how they're able to catch thieves.
